Breeding
At the Kennels we breed Scotties for type, temperament and good health.
We have one or two litters a year and usually keep one of the pups
to continue our breeding program. We show our dogs on a regular basis to
confirm that breeding program, but as most of the pups we breed go
to pet homes, good health and good
temperaments are essential characteristics of our Scotties. We sell only
on non-breeding contracts, which include a health guarantee,
registration with the CKC, initial pup shots and a happy, healthy Scottie.
Before you purchase a Scottish Terrier, our advice is to take the
time to research both the Scottie as a breed and your own situation in
relation to the breed. The Scottish Terrier portion of this site has
much of the information you need and links to other sites which offer
even more details. Contact the Scottie breed clubs and
rescue organizations in your area and once you have made your decision
to buy a Scottie take even more time to research breeders and the pups
they produce. Visit breeders to see their breeding stock and their
kennel operation and ask the tough questions you need
answered. Ask about medical conditions, genetic
testing, temperments and the special attention required to successfully
live with a Scottie. Be prepared, however, to be asked some tough
questions yourself as reputable Scottie breeders will want to insure
that their special pups are going to good homes.
At MacTavish Kennels we have been breeding and exhibiting Scottish
Terriers since the mid-1980's but our love and association
with the breed goes back much further than that. Indeed, with John it is
almost genetic. Grandmother Price bred and exhibited Scotties
in the 1930's using her younger children Judy and Grenville as
ring assistants at dogs shows and John's mother had a (mostly) Scottie
when he was a baby. John bought his first Scottie, MacTavish, when he
left home to join the Army and when Libby joined the family,
MacT eventually allowed her to feed and care for him, starting her 35
year love of the breed.
Please contact us at the Kennels regarding breedings in the future.
